The progressive loss of collagen and elastin in the breast tissue is very natural and very common among women, and it can ultimately produce a “drooping” or “sagging” effect in the breasts. This condition is called breast ptosis, and it can affect individuals at mild, moderate, or severe degrees. Breast ptosis can also develop at varying stages of life due to the fact that it can be caused by a number of distinct factors, including:
- The natural aging process
- Fluctuations in weight over time
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
- Excessive exposure to harmful ultraviolet rays
- Heredity
- Inconsistent bra support
- Smoking
- Breasts that are disproportionately large/heavy
For many women, the gradual loss of breast firmness and projection simply cannot be prevented. With that in mind, there are steps that can be taken to potentially slow down the development of breast ptosis. Consistently wearing bras that provide adequate breast support, utilizing sunscreen, steering clear of smoking and the use of tanning beds, and trying to maintain a healthy diet while limiting weight fluctuations are all habits that can help.
For individuals who are already experiencing the noticeable effects of breast ptosis, a surgical procedure is typically the only remedy that can effectively improve the condition. Breast lift surgery is one option that may be recommended. This procedure, medically known as “mastopexy,” removes excess, loose breast skin, firms the remaining skin, and lifts the breasts to a higher location on the chest. A breast lift is ultimately designed to give the breasts a more youthful projection and produce firmer, smoother skin. For women who are experiencing breast ptosis due in part to breasts that are too large for their bodies, a breast reduction can not only resize the breasts, but also provide a lifting effect to a certain extent.
