In our previous blog post, Dr. Thomas Lintner explained how some women choose to exchange their original breast implants for more subtle results later in life. In today’s post, Dr. Lintner provides guidance on how to select a breast implant size that will be right for you.
When it comes to breast implants, there is no formula that works for everyone. Every patient is unique, so it is important to remember that the same size breast implant can look very different from one person to the next. Often we see patients who think they want the same size as a friend who has had breast augmentation surgery in the past, but the truth is that it is not likely to look the way they think it will. In my office, we use a number of methods to help our patients really understand what each different size really means. I think that the Mentor Volume Sizing System has been an excellent tool for this; patients are able to “try on” different sizes, and get a feel for how heavy they are and what they might look like. I also have my patients bring in photos of looks they do and do not like, so we can be on the same page when it comes to communicating what their idea of a specific size might actually be.
For helping patients find the size that is right for them and achieving the best possible results, I like to utilize what I call the Four P’s of Sizing:
- Proportion – The implants you choose should fit your body appropriately.
- Physical activity – Women who are extremely active are often hindered by larger breasts, so this should be taken into consideration.
- Personality – I might not recommend a larger size implant for someone who is generally modest and does not want to draw a lot of attention to herself, as opposed to someone who has a more outgoing and vivacious personality.
- Personal preference – At the end of the day, the patient makes the final decision. I am here to guide them along and assist them in finding the right size, but the choice is always ultimately theirs. The only limitations to this would be if the breast implant they select cannot be placed safely. In these cases, I will recommend a safer choice that can still achieve a look the patient will be happy with.
