When considering breast augmentation – on its own or as a part of a mommy makeover – there are a number of options to be considered. Most women prefer to achieve a natural appearance, so when customizing the surgery, patients often ask whether it is better to have their breast implants placed above or below the muscle. The implant placement that can provide the most natural appearance will depend on each patient’s individual physique and aesthetic goals. The natural shape of your breast, in addition to your available breast tissue and skin thickness all play a part in determining which placement can best provide the outcome you desire. For most patients, placing the breast implant under the muscle is the best option. This placement provides an extremely natural appearance and can help to conceal any potential implant rippling that may be visible in patients who have thin skin or very little natural breast tissue available. For patients who are career competition bodybuilders, Dr. Lintner typically recommends placing the breast implants above the muscle for best results. But everyone is different, and, at the consult, he evaluates the needs and desires of each patient and keeping safety and end result in mind, he will help navigate all the different options for breast implant placement and help make the best choice for each patient and her particular needs.
To help my patients determine ideal implant placement, I consult with them in a one-on-one consultation. This allows me to listen to their individual goals and expectations, as well as conduct a physical examination that can help me make the best possible recommendations for their unique body type.
